If you think about how you live on holiday (minus the drinking) it’s pretty easy to understand how living by the sea can be beneficial to your health. There is all the super fresh sea air, long walks to be taken on the beach, sea swimming, and the nutritious local seafood. Even living on the coast in the UK without the stereotypical beach life white sand and hot sun can even benefit you.
With houses and apartments for sale north Wales, living by the sea could become a reality for you!
How is living by the sea good for your health?
A group of researchers from the European Centre for Environmental and Human Health at the Uni of Exeter looked at data from the UK census covering 48 million people to research how someones location could possibly affect their health.
The census contained information including the population’s self-assessed health. They were given the choice of saying that it was good, fairly good, or not good. This was then looked at in correspondence to where they lived, and finding shows that the closer you live to the sea, the better your health would be.
Somewhere to relax…
The research can’t be conclusive on why it’s beneficial to your health, but assume that it is because you have easy access to somewhere which encourages people to do more activities and reduces stress.
Another study conducted by this group reveals that people feel a lot calmer when they visit the seaside. They felt a lot more relaxed and more stress free than they did after making a similar trip to a park in a city or somewhere in the countryside.
Does the sea air help you sleep?
A psychiatrist from London Dr Natasha Bijlani said that being around the sea air can make it easier to sleep because it is a lot cleaner and fresher than other places, so it contains higher levels of oxygen. She also adds that the sound of the waves can soothe your brain. It helps to lower stress levels, clear your mind and even has the power to strengthen your immune system.
Healthy mind makes a healthy body
Living close to the sea gives you a better chance to exercise for free – it’s as if you have a large swimming pool on your doorstep. Taking a swim in the sea is not just a good mental break, but can also help your physical health by aiding weight management, lowering your chance of heart disease and high blood pressure. So maybe its time to move to somewhere by the coast, like North Wales!
If you don’t fancy swimming, there are other ways of exercising available to you living on the coast. You can try surfing, paddle boarding, walking, sailing, or wildlife watching. You would feel so motivated.
