Most of us, at some point, will experience a random pain appearing in our gums or get a toothache from nowhere.

Around 3 million people in the UK regularly get some form of oral pain. Many masking it with over the counter pain medication or just flat out ignoring it.

The truth is, our teeth and gums aren’t supposed to be painful for us, so if you’re experiencing pain, it’s usually down to an issue.

  • You’ve eaten or drank something cold/hot.

Perhaps been snacking on some ice cream, or drinking a hot cup of tea? Sounds delicious, but it will be irritating your enamel and causing you sensitivity.

Sensitivity is caused by worn-down tooth enamel or exposed nerves. So when you consume something hot or cold, it will hit this and you experience sudden pain.

  • Your enamel is eroding or eroded.

It is estimated over 2 million Britons haven’t taken a trip to a dentist in 10 years, and an alarming 6% have never been. 11% think that going to the dentists Caernarfon is unnecessary!

After finding that out, it’s safe to say many people in the UK won’t know if their teeth are in good health or not. They are likely to be unaware of what a good oral health routine is or how they can take care of their personal oral health problems.

Enamel is the first thing to take the hit when we don’t care for our teeth well enough, and unlike our skin, hair and nails, our enamel won’t grow back. It will wear away from eating sugary, highly acidic food or brushing too hard.

When it’s eroding, we’ll experience sharp pains.

  • You’ve got tooth decay.

With around 31% of the UK having tooth decay, it’s quite likely this could be the reason for your tooth pain. If your teeth have suddenly started hurting you, it could be decay, as often, it is around for some time without being spotted.

When tooth decay starts developing into an infection you may experience pain.

  • You’ve been grinding your teeth.

Bruxism is the clenching or grinding of teeth, more often experienced at night. This leads to sensitivity as you wear away at your enamel.

Some people may experience this from time to time for no reason, but it has strong links to stress.

As grinding happens when you don’t realise, it could be what’s causing your sudden pain.
