This means you can get your oral health and cleaning up to date before any discomfort starts. Can I visit the dentist whilst pregnant?

We would recommend that you continue to get your regular check-ups and cleanings throughout your pregnancy. As your hormones change, your gums can potentially swell and become irritated easier. Check-ups will keep the risk of potential infections and gum disease at a minimum.

If you need a procedure like a crown or filling, then you should aim to get this done by the second trimester. In the third trimester, sitting in the dental chair for an extended period of time may be uncomfortable. If you are at this stage in your pregnancy, consider postponing treatment until after the baby has arrived. Emergency work however should still be carried out.

Are dental medications safe to take whilst pregnant?

If you do need more serious dental treatments carried out, then you should do so with as little anaesthesia as possible – but also enough to make sure you are comfortable and do not feel any pain.

Medications often used with dental procedures are antibiotics such as amoxicillin and penicillin. These are safe to take whilst pregnant as long as you follow the instructions.

Can I have a dental x-ray whilst pregnant?

If you’re having an emergency dental treatment which requires an x-ray, you should get this done. One x-ray will not harm your baby. Lots of people choose to avoid this for peace of mind, but we can reassure you it is safe.

Overall, visiting the dentist is not risky whilst you are pregnant. Our team will do our best to make you feel comfortable and safe whilst you are waiting for your new arrival, so don’t delay your procedures and check-ups. Book your appointment with us today.
