A fire pit is an essential for any patio or outdoor living space. It serves as a focal point while offering a container in which you can build fires. You’ll probably spend more time outdoors if you have a fire pit, but if you aren’t using it correctly, it won’t be nearly as enjoyable as it could be. Check out these five tips to get the most out of your fire pit before summer even arrives!

1) Use Kiln Dried Firewood

While many people think of kiln dried firewood as being too expensive, it’s actually a very good value. Kiln dried firewood for sale in north wales burns longer than green wood and is less likely to cause sparks, meaning you won’t have to clean your patio or deck as often. Make sure you use dry wood whenever possible; if your firewood logs aren’t dry enough, don’t burn it. Instead, let it season until it can be burned safely.

2) Light Your Fire Pit From the Bottom Centre

By lighting your fire pit from its bottom centre, you’ll achieve an even burn that requires very little intervention. You don’t want to fill it too high—if your fuel load is too high, your fire could easily get out of control and cause damage to whatever surface it’s on. Keep an eye on any smoke produced and adjust as needed.

3) Choose a Suitable Spot

Before buying a fire pit, consider where you’re going to place it. Obviously, you want to place it in an area that will be safe and convenient. If your fire pit is near other structures or flammable objects (like trees), it could easily become a dangerous situation. If possible, choose a spot that allows for open space on all sides—this means no trees or other plants close by.

4) Use Sand to Protect the Bottom From Extreme Heat

Glass fire pits can easily crack or break due to extreme heat. To protect your glass, place a layer of sand on the bottom to create a protective barrier between your glass and hot embers. This will prolong its life and keep it looking beautiful. If you have an umbrella, you can use that too; just make sure it’s not made out of metal or plastic.

5) Adding a grill grate to your fire pit

Grills are great because they give you a way to get food and drinks closer to your fire. If you don’t already have a grill grate on your fire pit, consider adding one. Grilling is an excellent way to cook healthier meals, and it helps minimise smoke smells in your home if you cook with wood instead of charcoal or propane. Be sure that if you use a grill grate, it fits well into your fire pit.
